FHWA Analysis of Travel Choices and Scenarios for Sharing Rides

For the Federal Highway Administration, EBP assessed factors influencing decisions to use shared mobility options (e.g. shared rides and carpools).

The resulting report and associated paper in the Transportation Research Record used a survey of over 4,000 Transportation Network companies (TNC) users to build choice models that explore how decision factors (especially price and time) affect the decision to take private or shared TNC trips. The choice models also controlled for trip characteristics, rider characteristics, and urban context variables. A second part of the study examined ways that policy may encourage travel by more efficient modes, including the construction of custom scenario tool in R Shiny.
