Public Transportation’s Role in the Knowledge Economy

For the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), EBP (formerly EDR Group) was commissioned to conduct the research for their recently released report, "Public Transportation's Role in the Knowledge Economy."

The study looks at the economic impact of public transportation in select regions and takes a closer look into how public transit supports emerging tech scenes in three areas: Silicon Beach in Southern California, the Historic Technology District in Austin, Texas; and the Research Triangle in North Carolina.  According to the analysis, if the three cities’ long-range transportation plans are fully implemented by 2035, the transportation savings and accompanying productivity enhancement will generate:

  • More than $174 billion of cumulative business sales
  • $76.1 billion in wage income
  • $106.5 billion in additional gross domestic product (GDP) for the U.S. economy.
