Renewing the National Commitment to the Interstate Highway System: A Foundation for the Future

After a two-year process involving experts from across the nation, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) has released the report, "Renewing the National Commitment to the Interstate Highway System: A Foundation for the Future." The study was requested by the U.S. Congress, which funded TRB of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to identify actions needed to upgrade and restore the Interstate Highway System to fulfill its role as a crucial national asset, serving the needs of people, cities and towns, businesses, and the military. As a contribution to this larger effort, EDR Group (now EBP US) was requested to conduct research on how future highway demand will be affected by evolving shifts in the economy.

EBP US authored Appendix D, “Economic Outlook Factors Affecting Highway Demand.” This section used the TREDPLAN system to examine how emerging future scenarios for shifts in economic development and global trade will affect truck and commuting use of interstate highways. The report's Preface section on Page IX cites the contributions of Mark Sieber and Glen Weisbrod of EDR Group, with assistance from Derek Cutler and Cecilia Viggiano in authoring this report.
