Current Practice for Assessing Economic Development Impacts from Transportation Projects

A book available from the National Academy Press is the Synthesis of Current Practices for Assessing Economic Impacts of Transportation, by Glen Weisbrod of Economic Development Research Group (now EBP). This book, commissioned by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), reviews the current state of research and policy concerning economic development impacts of transportation projects.

It reviews over 200 research studies covering economic impacts of airport, road, rail, bus, sea and bicycle facilities throughout North America and Europe. It also presents findings from surveys of US state, metropolitan and Canadian provincial transportation planning departments, as well as information from the UK. The surveys examined agency policies concerning the assessment of economic development impacts, and also programs that seek to use transportation investments to enhance local or regional economic development.
