The conference brought together transportation professionals from across North America to discuss topics under the 2021 theme of: Our Future in Transportation.

On March 11, 2021, President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act into law, including $30.5 billion for public transit agencies. Transit agencies have been hit hard by the pandemic, with a loss of fare revenue, as well as declines in other revenue sources, such as state and local taxes.

For the American Public Transit Association (APTA), a nonprofit international association of 1,500 public and private sector organizations engaged in the public transit industry, EBP conducted an analysis of growing transit funding challenges precipitated by the pandemic across the U.S. Our analysis found that, even with the two rounds of emergency funding Congress provided in 2020, the nation’s public transit agencies still face a projected shortfall of $39.3 billion through the end of calendar year (CY) 2023 due to ongoing losses of fare revenue, tax revenue, and ridership.

On January 14th, 2021, Kyle Schroeckenthaler and Naomi Stein presented virtually during the fourth annual Consortium for Scenario Planning, featuring interactive presentations by practitioners, consultants, and academics who use scenarios to develop more equitable and inclusive places, address economic and environmental challenges, respond to infrastructural needs, and more.

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) 100th Annual Meeting was conducted as a virtual event over a series of dates throughout January 2021. EBP Colleagues presented a variety of topics and participating in a number of committee meetings.

This year, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) officially designated AP090 Transit Data as a Standing Committee. Formerly, the topic of transit data was covered by the Joint Subcommittee on Transformative Trends in Transit Data (AP000/ABJ00). This designation reflects the importance of data for public transit agencies.

Naomi Stein was quoted in an article entitled "Monorail between Montgomery and Frederick counties would generate billions in economic benefits, study says," published in the October 29th, 2020 issue of the Washington Post.

On October 1. 2020, Scott Middleton and Adam Blair presented a poster titled “Measuring Road Safety in Diverse Rural Environments” at the 3rd National Summit on Rural Road Safety, which was held virtually from September 30 to October 1, 2020. The summit is an important national forum for engaging a wide variety of stakeholders and raising awareness on critical rural road safety issues, including non-occupant protection, speeding, and impaired and distracted driving.

EBP’s poster was presented as part of the session “– How to Make Rural Roads Safe for Everyone: Quantifying Rural Road Safety.” The content of the poster was drawn from the EBP’s study for the Federal Highway Administration on Emerging Technologies and Opportunities for Improved Mobility and Safety in Rural Areas, which investigated how new transportation options such as shared mobility and connected and automated vehicles could be leveraged to meet the needs of rural environments. Through this work, EBP has analyzed the relationship between socioeconomics, infrastructure, travel behavior, and safety and mobility outcomes in different types of rural areas.
